Tell the Coastal Commission to Oppose the Poseidon Desalination Facility in Huntington Beach
UPDATE: At their November 2013 meeting, the CA Coastal Commission continued (postponed) this decision, instructing Poseidon to further evaluate other alternatives. Thank you for your support.
In November, the California Coastal Commission will be deciding whether or not to permit a massive ocean desalination facility on our coast – the Poseidon-Huntington Beach Desalination Project. This proposed project is just one of numerous ocean desalination projects proposed for the coast in California. Learn more about this project.
As it is currently designed, the project proposal would set the lowest possible standards for protecting our coast and ocean.
There are several ways to design ocean desalination facilities. But if it is not done properly:
- the seawater intake can unnecessarily kill marine life;
- discharging highly concentrated brine to the ocean degrades water quality and marine life habitat if not properly diluted;
- ocean desalination is the most energy-intensive and expensive water supply option in California. So, these facilities increase greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to sea level rise and ocean acidification.
The science community has recently made recommendations to California state agencies on how to best minimize these unacceptable and unnecessary environmental impacts. Until Poseidon meets these scientific recommendations, the Coastal Commission should deny this permit.
Please join us in protecting our coast and ocean by sending the Coastal Commission a message today: DENY THE HUNTINGTON BEACH OCEAN DESALINATION FACILITY AND ENSURE THAT THIS PROJECT, AND THE MANY MORE TO FOLLOW, WON’T DESTROY PRECIOUS MARINE LIFE AND HABITAT!
